You must apply for Basic health care insurance in the Netherlands when:

• You work in paid employment or are self-employed in The Netherlands.
• You work in The Netherlands for short periods of time (seasonal work).
• You work part-time in The Netherlands.

The Basic Insurance covers standard healthcare, such as visits to the general practitioner. Every resident of the Netherlands is required to have Basic Insurance. Each year, the Dutch government determines what is included in the basic package. Therefore, the content of the Basic Insurance is the same with every health insurer.

An additional health insurance covers medical expenses that are not included in your Basic Insurance. This can include alternative care, physiotherapy, glasses, or contact lenses.

Supplementary insurance covers medical expenses that aren’t included in the Basic insurance, such as dental care or emergency medical care abroad. Depending on your needs, you can choose the supplementary insurance that suits your situation. If you don’t need much care, the Basic health insurance may suffice.

Vergoedingen

Basic health insurance is mandatory for everyone in the Netherlands and covers standard care such as GP visits. Each year, the Dutch government decides what’s included in the basic package. If you’re under 18, you’re covered under one of your parents' policies.

Vergoedingen

Everyone over the age of 18 has a mandatory deductible (verplicht eigen risico) of €385. This means that you pay the first €385 of your healthcare costs covered by the Basic Insurance yourself. The deductible applies to most care from the Basic Insurance, such as hospital care, medication, and blood tests. Have you fully used your deductible? Have you paid the first €385 yourself? Then you receive full reimbursement as determined by law.

A co-payment is a portion of healthcare costs you pay yourself.

The government decides which healthcare is covered and sets the maximum reimbursement. For care covered by the basic health insurance, you pay a deductible. Once you’ve reached your deductible limit for the year, you no longer pay it. However, in some cases, you must pay a co-payment, regardless of whether your deductible has been reached. The co-payment is separate from your deductible and is determined by the government, along with the types of care it applies to.

Willing to take a risk? If you rarely need healthcare, you can opt for a voluntary deductible. This lowers your monthly premium! However, if you do need care, you'll pay a higher deductible.
